Covid-19 Immigrant Relief Fund

Covid-19 Immigrant Relief Fund

April 16, 2020

Under the CARES Act, the federal government is distributing millions of $1,200 checks to help Americans financially survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, not everyone qualifies. Specifically, those without Social Security numbers, green cards, and/or legal status will not receive checks—even though they may need them the most.

On April 1st, our very own Alen Takhsh responded to this problem by joining forces with Atty. Michael Ibrahim and non-attorney Ashkan Kheirhahvash created the COVID-19 Immigrant Relief Fund. This GoFundMe aims to provide 25 individuals or families with $1,000 grants by the end of April. Recipients may be international students, undocumented immigrants, or mixed-status households. To accomplish this goal, the GoFundMe’s organizers are will be collaborating with one or multiple immigrant advocacy groups in order to identify potential recipients.

Countless undocumented immigrants will be left to fend for themselves during the pandemic, and few will seek help from the government out of fear of being deemed a public charge. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Attorney Takhsh explained that this fundraiser is a way of using their contacts and resources to help address this overwhelming need. Similar campaigns will likely form in the coming weeks to help undocumented individuals and families.

Regardless of a person’s immigration status, we are in this together. With the CARES Act restrictions, the administration may have implied that undocumented immigrants do not deserve help—but this is where our team (and others like us) have the opportunity to take the lead.
